Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo: Our Honest Review of the Ultimate Couples Escape

Costa Rica had been calling to me for as long as I can remember. I always imagined a place where lush rainforests meet the sea, where monkeys swing through trees and the air smells like adventure. The kind of place that would feel wild yet grounding. When we finally booked our stay at the Four Seasons Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, it was one of those rare moments where reality fully lived up to the dream.

We have now been back multiple times and I can say with confidence that this resort is one of the most exceptional places we have stayed. It blends warm hospitality, refined design, and one of the most breathtaking natural backdrops I have ever experienced. If you are planning a romantic escape, honeymoon, or just craving somewhere to truly unwind, this place is special.

Arriving at Peninsula Papagayo

The journey to the resort is easy and scenic. From Liberia airport, we were met by the Four Seasons team who arranged our transfer through lush greenery and winding hills. As you approach the peninsula, it begins to feel like you are entering a private corner of the world. The property itself sits between two beautiful beaches and is surrounded by protected tropical forest. You hear the birds before you even see the ocean.

From the second we arrived, the service was warm, genuine, and unpretentious. That theme stayed consistent throughout our entire stay. The staff remembered our names, brought our favorite drinks before we even asked, and offered tips and insights that felt thoughtful rather than rehearsed.

The Rooms

We have stayed in both an ocean view suite and a hillside casita, and each had its own kind of magic. The rooms are stylish but natural, designed to blend into the landscape with materials like wood, stone, and soft neutral tones. Floor to ceiling windows let the light pour in and you are just as likely to see a monkey as you are a sunset.

The outdoor showers are dreamy. The kind of space where you find yourself taking longer showers just because you can. Everything in the room feels curated but comfortable. From the bed to the lighting to the little details like slippers and locally made bath products, it is clear they thought about how guests live, not just how a room should look.

Dining

Let’s just say you will not go hungry here. The resort offers several restaurants and lounges, each with its own menu and setting. From poolside tacos to fresh ceviche to the most perfectly crispy yucca fries, every dish we had felt flavorful and fresh.

We especially loved the seafood dishes, the wood fired oven flatbreads, and the breakfast spread with everything from fresh fruit and smoothies to made to order Costa Rican specialties. Whether you want something healthy or indulgent, you will find it. There are also plenty of options for cocktails, local beers, and wines by the glass, plus a mixology program that makes even a simple spritz feel elevated.

Activities and Experiences

You can be as active or relaxed as you want here. There are yoga classes, tennis courts, golf, boat excursions, surfing lessons, nature walks, and cooking classes. But also there are hammocks under palm trees, infinity pools with panoramic views, and cabanas that make doing nothing feel like an art form.

Some of our favorite moments from our visits have been spontaneous. Watching toucans hop from branch to branch while having morning coffee. Jumping in the ocean at golden hour. Riding bikes through quiet forest paths and stopping for fresh coconut water on the beach.

There is also a spa that should not be missed. The treatments are inspired by the elements and use local ingredients. We booked a couples massage that started with a volcanic clay foot ritual and ended with us half asleep, wrapped in eucalyptus towels, wondering if we ever needed to leave.

A Place Built for the Perfect Experience

Everything about this resort invites connection. Whether you are traveling for your honeymoon, anniversary, or just looking for time together without distractions, it feels made for two. The rooms are romantic without trying too hard. The staff gives you space but also makes sure you are taken care of. The sunsets seem like they are performing just for you.

Each time we visit, we leave feeling more grounded, more rested, and more in love with both the place and each other.

What to Pack for a Trip to Four Seasons Costa Rica

Packing for this trip is all about breezy, polished pieces that feel effortless. Lightweight fabrics like linen and cotton are perfect for the climate. During the day, swimsuits, cover-ups, shorts, and tanks are ideal for beach and pool time. In the evening, flowy dresses, button-downs, and easy jumpsuits work beautifully for dinner or cocktails at the bar.

You will want sandals that are both cute and comfortable, a packable sunhat, and something a little elevated for romantic dinners. I always bring at least one set that feels special just in case the mood strikes for a sunset toast or date night on the beach.
