Planning a trip to Rome and want to soak up the best of the Eternal City without feeling rushed or overwhelmed? You’re in the right place!
We designed this list from our own experience, balancing the iconic sights with the slower, sweeter side of Rome. Whether it’s your first time or you’re returning with fresh eyes, here are 10 unforgettable things to do that will help you truly savor your Roman holiday.
1. Start at the Vatican (but skip the crowds)
The Vatican is incredible, but it gets packed fast. Book an early morning guided tour that includes breakfast inside the Vatican Museums. You’ll wander through the halls before the crowds arrive and get a peaceful look at the Sistine Chapel. We went with City Wonders and it was such a calming, magical way to start the day.

2. Walk Through the Colosseum Like a Gladiator
If the Colosseum is on your list (and it should be), go beyond the basic ticket. Choose a tour that includes access to the arena floor and upper ring. Walking through the same entrance the gladiators once did feels surreal, and a good guide makes the history come alive.
We also booked with City Wonders for a tour of the Colosseum. In busy cities where we are short on time we love skip the line options and companies that limit their group sizes. For this tour we were able to walk around the arena floor and the upper ring. It was absolutely amazing hearing about the history and to see this incredible site in person. Since my other half is obsessed with Gladiator and Roman history it was an especially moving experience walking through the Gladiator entrance. Once we finished our tour of the Colosseum we exited to the Forum.

3. Wander the Roman Forum
Right next to the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, a sprawling site filled with ruins, columns, and ancient temples. It’s easy to underestimate how massive and beautiful this place is, so give yourself at least an hour. We recommend visiting right after the Colosseum for context—and comfort.

4. Visit the Pantheon and Stay for a Drink Nearby
This is one of the most perfectly preserved buildings in Rome and still one of the most awe-inspiring. After you walk through, find a nearby café and sit outside. The square is full of life and watching the crowds pass by with the Pantheon in the background is peak Rome energy.

5. Go on a Daily Gelato Mission
It’s not just dessert, it’s a ritual. We loved Angelino ai Fori and Giolitti, but honestly, the real fun is picking a new gelateria every day. Ask the staff for their seasonal favorite and enjoy every bite.

6. Drink Espresso Like an Italian
Forget takeaway cups. In Rome, espresso is meant to be enjoyed standing at the bar. We loved Sant’Eustachio Il Caffè for its rich, creamy brew, but you’ll find great coffee at nearly every corner. Pro tip: cappuccino is a morning-only drink in Italy, so switch to espresso or macchiato in the afternoon.

7. Toss a Coin in the Trevi Fountain
Sure, it’s popular but it’s iconic for a reason. Toss a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder and make a wish. Tradition says it guarantees a return to Rome. From there, walk to the Spanish Steps and enjoy a little luxury window-shopping (or real shopping) along Via Condotti.

8. Stroll Through Trastevere with No Agenda
Trastevere is our favorite Roman neighborhood to explore without a plan. Wander its cobblestone alleys, pop into tiny shops, grab gelato, or stop for an Aperol spritz. It’s lively, local, and endlessly photogenic.

9. Treat Yourself to an Epic Meal
Two standout meals from our trip:
- Roma Sparita for cacio e pepe served in a crispy parmesan bowl
- AROMA Restaurant for a fine dining experience with a jaw-dropping view of the Colosseum
Make reservations in advance and take your time. Dinner in Rome is meant to be an experience, not a rush.

AROMA at Palazzo Manfredi – This is a rooftop Michelin starred restaurant with the BEST view of the Colosseum in Rome. Their Kobe beef and chocolate souffle is absolutely amazing.

10. Embrace Aperitivo Hour
Right before dinner, pause for aperitivo. Grab a spritz or glass of wine and enjoy the early evening light. Many cafés serve small plates with drinks, so you can sit back, snack, and people-watch. It’s not just a drink, it’s a lifestyle.

Our Takeaway
